The flagship wine grape of South Africa, Pinotage is one of the world's best crosses, a mix of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. It usually produces deep red wines with the same low tannins as Pinot Noir, but with a more earthy flavor. A versatile grape, it is also used to make fortified or sparkling wines. Easy to grow and vinify, Pinotage is very distinct from the classic French grapes. Some Pinotage is produced in the Sonoma region of California.
